The Oakdale City Council approved a resolution authorizing purchase of a 2025 Bandit Intimidator 12 XP wood chipper from Cal Line Equipment for $62,438.74. City public services staff told the council the current 1996 chipper is unreliable, frequently clogs and is expensive to maintain, and that the new drum-style unit will better handle vining material.
Stanley, presenting the item, said the old disc-style chipper requires frequent unplugging and parts are increasingly unavailable; the new machine includes modern safety features and is expected to reduce labor and outside contractor costs. Staff estimated approximately $15,000 in annual savings from reduced man‑hours and lower equipment wear and tear.
Procurement was made through the Sourcewell cooperative purchasing program; staff said the purchase includes a 5-year GUTS warranty covering internal components, a 3-year/2,000-hour limited engine warranty and a 1-year warranty on bolt-on components. Funding was identified in the city's capital/replacement funds and the purchase is planned to be paid from Streets Fund (110), Parks Replacement Fund (549), Sewer Capital Replacement Fund (621), Water Capital Replacement Fund (644) and by surplusing the existing 1996 chipper.
Council members asked how the purchase was allocated across funds and about training; Stanley said the chipper is used at well sites, parks and across public works so costs are split proportionately and Cal Line Equipment will provide field training for staff. A motion to authorize the purchase passed on a 4-0 roll-call vote.
