St. Charles proclaims Veterans Day and presents Spirit of St. Charles awards to local businesses, barber and Scouts

Mayor Clint Hall read a Veterans Day proclamation and declared Nov. 11, 2025, as Veterans Day in the City of St. Charles, asking residents to acknowledge and honor veterans— contributions to democracy, individual freedom and human rights.
On behalf of Ward 5, Alderman Ed Bezner and Alderman Weber presented the 2025 Spirit of St. Charles awards. Parent Petroleum received the Ward 5 business honor; Bezner said Parent Petroleum has been in St. Charles for 40 years, employs nearly 300 people company-wide (about 60 locally), and is building a new roughly 3,000-square-foot office and storage facility on Route 64. Bezner cited the company—s charitable programs, including an annual —pumpathon— and golf outing that benefit local nonprofits.
The council presented the Spirit Award to Derek Swan for his ownership of Beardsley Barber Shops and for ministry and community work. The council noted that under Swan—s leadership Beardsley grew to multiple locations and provides sensory-friendly haircuts for people with autism, deafness and other disabilities. The city credited Swan—s partnerships with organizations such as MyRecess Therapy and Rising Life Project and described his outreach around the community.
Boy Scout Troop 13 was named the youth honoree. Council remarks described the troop—s U.S. flag program (about 150 homes across 12 routes), outreach in Memorial Day and Veterans Day events, and programs that support troop operations. The council noted Troop 13 will mark its centennial on Feb. 21, 2026.
Mayor Hall encouraged attendance at the city—s Veterans Day ceremony, announced for Nov. 11 at 10:30 a.m. at the city fire station, and thanked the award recipients for contributions to the community.
