Commission greets German student delegation, proclaims Lawrence Drive Electric Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day

The Lawrence City Commission on Oct. 7 welcomed a delegation of 12 students and chaperones from Eutin (Eutin), Germany as part of the Sister Cities Lawrence program. Bill Kiel, chair of Sister Cities Lawrence, and chaperones Ingrid Kramer and Lena Siegert introduced the students and thanked host families and city supporters for several decades of exchanges.
Mayor Mike Deaver read two proclamations. The first designated Sunday, Oct. 12, 2025 as Lawrence Drive Electric Day and encouraged residents to attend the Lawrence Electric Vehicle Showcase at South Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The proclamation cited transportation as a leading local source of greenhouse-gas emissions and promoted plug-in electric vehicles as an opportunity to reduce emissions.
The second proclamation named Monday, Oct. 13, 2025 as Indigenous Peoples' Day in Lawrence. The proclamation acknowledged the ancestral homelands of the Kanza and Osage peoples, noted Haskell Indian Nations University's presence in Lawrence and called for reflection on the history and contributions of indigenous communities.
Both proclamations were ceremonial and informational; no formal vote was required for adoption during the meeting.
