Teachers and families press BCPS to adopt a post-Labor Day start for 2026-27 calendar

Jeff Friedman, a 19-year veteran BCPS teacher, told trustees the calendar committee has "no data" showing a pre-Labor Day start improves achievement and pointed to a petition with nearly 700 signatures and multiple BCPS survey results showing community preference for a later start. "Start after Labor Day, cut back on interruptions during the school year and make the calendar work," Friedman said.
Ramona Arthur Basilio of the PTA Council urged the board to "elevate" National Education Week and to make community events more meaningful rather than perfunctory calendar entries. Other public commenters pushed the district to consider aligning bully-prevention programming and community-building events with established national dates.
The board postponed the scheduled staff report on school start times (agenda item K1) to a future meeting earlier in the agenda, and trustees asked staff to continue calendar conversations and consider adjustments requested by community members.
