District proclaims School Bus Safety Week; principals honored for Principal Appreciation Month

The Allegany County Board of Education presented a proclamation recognizing National School Bus Safety Week (Oct. 20—Oct. 24) and observed Principal Appreciation Month during the Oct. 14 meeting.
Mister Mike Matthews accepted the bus-safety proclamation on behalf of the district—s drivers and aides, noting the district—s 150 school bus drivers and aides and reporting that last school year the buses traveled 1,400,000 miles (not including summer school mileage). Matthews reminded motorists that state law requires drivers to stop for a school bus with red warning lights flashing and asked the public to report red-light run-throughs to the transportation office, which shares information with local law enforcement. He also encouraged prospective drivers to call the transportation office for training and hiring information.
Superintendent Martorano recognized the district—s principals for October—s Principal Appreciation Month, inviting each principal to the front to receive a certificate and a leadership book that will be used in a district leadership book study. The superintendent named 22 principals by school during the presentation and thanked them for leadership and dedication to students and staff.
Both the proclamation and the principals— recognitions were ceremonial items included in the superintendent—s report; no board action was required.
