The Needham Design Review Board on Nov. 3 approved proposed awnings, lighting and awning signage for the Bookshop of Needham, to occupy 283 Chestnut Street.
Applicant representatives presented plans for three canvas awnings — a large center awning carrying the shop name and two smaller side awnings carrying a logo — gooseneck lighting above the awnings, and replacement of first‑floor shutters and the building address numerals. The applicants said the awnings are intended primarily to reduce sun exposure to interior bookshelves and to provide a pedestrian‑scale storefront treatment similar to other nearby storefronts.
Board members described the design as “sharp” and high‑contrast and asked the applicant to confirm the area of the logo-type (a typewriter motif) so the Building Department can determine whether the graphic triggers additional permit review. The applicant estimated the main sign area at roughly 7.5 feet by 3 feet but said the separate typewriter graphic is small (applicant said not bigger than 6 square feet) and will not be backlit. The board approved the awning and lighting package and then separately approved the awning signage by roll call. Roll-call votes read during the meeting recorded: Steve — yes; Susan — yes; Harrell — yes; Felix — yes; Chair (Mark Losing) — yes.
The building department will verify sign area and whether the graphic elements trigger a separate permitting process; applicants were instructed to submit full sign-area dimensions to the Building Department when applying for permits.
