Chester County proclaims World Sight Day; student and health director urge vision screenings and awareness

The Chester County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 8 proclaimed Oct. 9, 2025, as World Sight Day in the county and encouraged residents to schedule regular vision examinations and to support eye-health awareness.
Commissioner Eric Rowe read a proclamation that cites World Health Organization observances and notes a Pennsylvania General Assembly resolution under consideration to designate October as Healthy Vision Week. Jean Franklin, Chester County health director, accepted the proclamation and described the public-health role in vision prevention, citing newborn and school screenings and links between vaccination and prevention of conditions that can damage eyesight.
The proclamation was accepted on behalf of a student and scout, identified in the meeting as Ian Nyack, a senior at Downingtown STEM Academy and a member of Scout Troop 52. Nyack told the board he is pursuing an Eagle Scout project and leads an initiative called Eyes for Humanity to raise awareness of myopia and eye health in families and schools. He said that in the U.S. about 43 percent of people have some degree of myopia and that estimates project nearly 50 percent of the world will have some degree of myopia by 2050. He urged awareness of screen time, blue light exposure and the importance of regular vision screenings.
"I'd like to thank the entire Chester County Commission for their recognition of World Sight Day and above that for their continued support in promoting eye health and vision care across Chester County," Nyack said.
The proclamation is signed by Commissioners Josh Maxwell, Marion Moskowitz and Eric Rowe; the board encouraged residents to seek screenings and public-health resources on chesco.org.
