Election office reports SURE-system duplication, urges voters to plan ahead for on-demand voting

Election staff reported that the state SURE voter-management system duplicated multiple mail-in ballots that were scheduled to be sent to 16 voters. County election staff said they notified those voters, removed duplicate ballots in the local process, and ensured each of the 16 will receive a single mail-in ballot.
Elections staff explained on-demand (in-office) voting requires multiple steps that the state system must verify. Jen, an election-office staff member, described the practical processing time: "it takes, at the most, an hour, at the least, 20 minutes" to process an on-demand mail-in ballot because the application must be entered and verified in the SURE system before the ballot can be issued.
Staff said common problems are missing signatures or missing dates on the ballot envelope; these cases require "curing" before a ballot can be counted and can require staff effort to contact the voter. The office reported that, as of the meeting, 3,616 mail-in/absentee ballots had been issued and 125 had been returned for processing the prior day.
The board also said it needs additional election judges and clerks in several precincts. Election staff said precinct residency is not required for judges or clerks; only Carbon County registration is required.
Separately, the election office said Weatherly Borough did not officially notify county election staff about a mayoral resignation and the subsequent appointment. Because the election office received no formal notice from Weatherly—s solicitor, the newly appointed mayor will not appear on the ballot unless the borough provides the required official communication.
Key deadlines mentioned at the meeting: Oct. 20 is the last day to register to vote for the upcoming election; Oct. 28 is the last day to submit mail-in-ballot applications to the county.
