The commissioners issued two proclamations on Nov. 4: one recognizing National Family Caregivers Month in Saint Mary's County and another recognizing National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week.
At the Department of Aging presentation following the caregivers proclamation, Rebecca Kessler and other department staff highlighted caregiver support services including support groups, training and workshops, and an upcoming caregiver breakfast on Nov. 18 at the James Forrest technical center (9:00 a.m., open to the public). Laurie Jennings Harris, the department director, said staff will assist caregivers and stressed the department relies on caregivers and community partners to help older adults remain at home.
During the animal-shelter proclamation, county officials and shelter staff praised the Saint Mary's County Animal Adoption and Rescue Center for adoption, foster and volunteer programs. Shelter staff described outreach activities, social-media promotion and special events designed to increase adoptions. Commissioners and staff noted the shelter remains busy year-round and thanked shelter volunteers and staff for their service. A dog named "Shaggy" was presented during the proclamation and was noted as already claimed for adoption by county staff, with a commissioner offering to sponsor adoption costs.
Both proclamations were adopted by the board and staff used the recognition to publicize services and upcoming events.
