Representatives of the St. Mary's County Chamber of Commerce briefed commissioners on the chamber's 2025 strategic plan, membership services and recent initiatives, and invited engagement from county leaders.
Ryan Schlauterbeck, board chair, and Christine Bertmark, chamber CEO, described a new digital community guide and member directory that was distributed to subscribers, the chamber's business roundtables and education events, and outreach efforts that included forums with state and federal representatives. Bertmark said the chamber operates nonpartisan government-affairs review of bills and noted the chamber issued frequent alerts related to the Maryland Family Leave Act while its implementation details are being developed by the Department of Labor.
Chamber leaders said they will host a Department of Labor seminar on Nov. 12 to brief members on Family Leave Act implementation and remaining open questions such as contribution shares and employer thresholds. They also outlined upcoming events including a business-after-hours on Nov. 18 and a December session on upcoming tax changes.
Commissioners thanked the chamber for outreach and asked staff questions about Family Leave Act details; chamber leaders invited members and county staff to the Nov. 12 seminar for in-depth detail.
