Stephanie Draper, an election judge and Denton County resident, used the public-comment period at the Nov. 4 Denton County Commissioners Court meeting to urge the court to begin the process of adopting countywide voting for election day.
Draper said the current system requiring voters to use their assigned precinct polling place "worked years ago" but is straining under population growth. "I have turned away people who arrived in rideshares, people who took time off of work, paid for transportation, showed up eager to vote to find out they were at the wrong location," she said. She described college students without transportation who did not know their precinct and left without voting.
Draper pointed to other Texas counties that have adopted countywide voting, including Tarrant, Collin, Travis and Dallas counties, and said those jurisdictions have seen "higher voter participation, shorter lines, and smoother elections." She asked the court to "begin the process of adopting countywide voting" so voters can cast ballots at any county polling location on election day, as they already may do during early voting.
The commissioners court did not take formal action on Draper’s request during the meeting. The comment was recorded during the court’s public-comment period and no staff report or motion to initiate a countywide-voting implementation process appeared in the published agenda for this session.
