Ramsey County to join Operation Greenlight and grant employees Friday after Christmas off

Ramsey County commissioners voted to participate in Operation Greenlight 2025 and to give county employees the Friday after Christmas (Dec. 26) off this year.

The board approved a resolution of participation in the nationwide Operation Greenlight campaign to illuminate county buildings green in support of veterans; staff said the initiative carries no cost to the county.

On employee holiday time, commissioners debated whether to extend similar closure practices to other holidays but ultimately approved granting Dec. 26 off to county employees for 2025, noting the county already has established practices for other holidays in the employee handbook. One commissioner noted those days are typically low-traffic and that offering the day helps employees spend additional time with family.

The motion to grant the day off passed by voice vote. Staff will implement the calendar change and advise departments on coverage for essential services.
