"We should put something up on the docket for the next board meeting and have a discussion about some emergency funds," a resident identified in the record as Ben said during public comment, describing SNAP access disruptions and urging the county to consider using contingency funds to support local food banks.
Liz Hamilton, director of Health and Human Services, told the board the county had received a morning update consistent with public comment: USDA is navigating litigation and contingency-funding questions and the state and federal direction could arrive in the next day or two. "It will take 1 to 3 weeks before funds would be shifted to—the electronic benefits transfer card themselves," Hamilton said. She said county staff would follow federal direction and await the state's decision about contingency funds before announcing any local changes.
Hamilton also noted the department is advising impacted clients directly and said the county will update the public as new federal or state instructions are issued. Several board members and commenters suggested exploring short-term local assistance to food banks and community outreach while state and federal agencies resolve the funding question.
