Committee weighs synthetic turf versus natural grass amid health, maintenance and budget concerns

Committee members and school staff debated whether to specify synthetic turf for the new high‑school athletic fields, acknowledging competing goals of year‑round field availability and environmental and health risks.

A committee member, Jenna, urged caution: "Most of these artificial turfs... they have lead. They have phthalates. They have PFAS," and raised concern about microplastics and heat‑island effects that could affect the local Forest River watershed. She asked the committee to consider long‑term environmental impacts rather than focus solely on short‑term maintenance savings.

Athletic staff countered that existing natural fields in the city suffer drainage and maintenance limitations that reduce playing time. An Accenture representative said removing the synthetic field from the project scope now would lower the project baseline and be difficult to restore later, adding a budgetary argument in favor of keeping synthetic turf in the estimate while the committee refines material and infill choices. The design team said it will pursue the "healthiest version" of synthetic surfacing if the committee keeps it in scope and will return with detailed options on infill materials, heat mitigation and lifecycle maintenance.

No formal vote was taken on the field surface during the meeting; the discussion concluded with the design team and athletics staff tasked with returning options that balance health, durability and budget impacts.
