Martin Arts announces student award winners, reports large donation bolstering scholarship fund

Nancy Turrell, executive director of Martin Arts, used the Martin County School Board workshop on Nov. 4, 2025 to announce the winners of the Martin Arts Awards and to report a sizable donation to the group’s scholarship fund.
"I just wanted to spend a few minutes just announcing the student recipients from the very exciting Martin Arts Awards event," Turrell told the board during the public comment period. She named the student literary artist as Mark D'Alessio of Martin County High School, the student performing artists as Natalia Carabello (who attends Clark and participates in drama at South Fork) and Mallory Goddard (who performed with Carabello), and the student visual artist as Katherine Johnson of South Fork High School.
Turrell said each of the three student winners received scholarship funds. "We just had a very large donation last week from the Rappaport Foundation that has taken our scholarship fund up closer to the $100,000 that we're trying to get to as a corpus of those scholarship funds," she said. Turrell also noted that Tammy Conrad, recently retired from South Fork, was recognized for excellence in arts education at the awards event at the Lyric Theater.
Turrell described how the awards program pairs student nominees with professionals to read or perform students' work and highlighted the community benefit of showcasing local student talent.
Board members noted the program and one board member said the agenda item for the arts foundation will be moved to the December workshop for further board consideration. No board action or vote took place during the Nov. 4 workshop.
