Senate bill would create Massachusetts Fallen Firefighter Memorial motorcycle license plate

A bill filed in the Massachusetts Senate on Jan. 17, 2025, would authorize a Massachusetts Fallen Firefighter Memorial motorcycle license plate and direct most of the plate fee to support the statewide memorial at the State House. The text would amend Chapter 90 of the Massachusetts General Laws by inserting a new Section 6D. Under the proposed section, the registrar ‘‘upon payment of the fee as required in section 33, shall furnish a special distinctive Firefighters Memorial Motorcycle License Plate for use on privately owned motorcycles.’’ The bill says the motorcycle plate ‘‘shall be comparable to the current Firefighters Memorial License Plate for automobiles established in 2006.’’

The bill sets the special plate fee at $40 and specifies how that revenue would be split: $28 of the fee would go to support the Massachusetts Fallen Firefighter Memorial and $12 would go to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation for manufacturing the plate. The measure directs issuance and renewal fees to be collected by the registrar to fund the statewide memorial located at Ashburton Park at the Massachusetts State House. The bill also states the memorial efforts would be coordinated by the Massachusetts Fallen Firefighter Memorial charitable organization, identified in the text as a 501(c)(3) corporation, and references section 2f(c) for coordination requirements.
