A school staff member told parents at a curriculum night at Crystal Lake School that the event "is for our parents to get a good idea of what is being taught, all the different programs that we have going on, and all the extracurricular activities too that we have to offer."
A parent in attendance said the evening highlighted expanded online opportunities for students and parents, including "a lot of chances online at home with math and with reading this year" and the ability for parents to see "weekly grades" so "we can check each week and see the progress of our kids, which I think is awesome."
Staff members described the school's grade book (referred to in the meeting as "Focus") as a primary tool parents will use to monitor grades and said the school is introducing AVID, a program focused on student organization. "AVID's new, and we are so excited about AVID. We are working on organization. That is the first thing that we are tackling," a staff member said.
To support organization and parent visibility into classroom work, staff described a binder system students will use so they "get to take flight in and be able to show their parents what's happening here at school." Staff thanked parents for attending and noted a strong turnout for the event.
No formal actions, votes, or policy decisions were recorded during the meeting; the session consisted of program descriptions and information for parents.
