Ted Scarlett told the San Jose City Council during the public-comment period that the city—s independent police auditor office has not produced meaningful outcomes and urged the council to take stronger action.
"Okay. Good afternoon, counsel. My name's Ted Scarlett. And, since this is about the auditor, I will speak of that," Scarlett said during the meeting's public-comment period. He said he had "been trying to talk to you for over a year" and asked the council to give the issue more attention.
Scarlett criticized prior auditors— effectiveness. "My past experience, years ago was that it just basically felt like a way to, fade things that had happened, and you didn't any get you didn't get any real, results," he said, adding that he would "just go to a lawyer and file a lawsuit at this point." He also expressed support for police officers, saying, "I support good police officers," and described policing as "horrendously more challenging today."
Council members did not take public action during the meeting on the independent police auditor office. After public comment the council announced it would adjourn to closed session; when the meeting returned the presiding officer said there was no readout from closed session and the council adjourned.
The remarks were made during the public-comment portion of the meeting and did not include a formal motion, staff presentation, or a council response recorded in the public transcript.
