During the public comment period, Susan Ferguson, an HOA treasurer and longtime resident, asked the commission to help the neighborhood with two safety issues: aggressive motorcycle racing and tall trees that now obscure recently installed street lamps.
Ferguson said her homeowners association completed two phases of street improvements — fascia, trim and repainting, and replacement of 40‑year‑old fencing — and installed two 25‑mph flashing speed signs and a center stripe with reflectors. "People are staying in their own lane and they're slowing down except we still have some teenagers that are racing their motorcycles at full throttle," she said. Ferguson said police used to patrol the street two to three times a day before the COVID‑era staffing changes and she has not seen similar patrols recently; she asked the city to post more officers on the street.
Ferguson also said the city installed five street lamps that are now obscured by trees more than 50 feet tall. She said she obtained estimates for tree trimming and asked whether the city could help trim trees where they cover the lights. "I'm all about preventing something from happening if at all possible before waiting for an emergency," she said, citing the Santa Ana winds in 2024 as an example of a storm that could cause tree failures near wires.
Chair Gray thanked Ferguson and noted the concern had reached the appropriate ears; staff and commissioners acknowledged her request. The record does not show a formal staff pledge to schedule trimming or increased patrols during the meeting; Ferguson said she had spoken with a city representative (Chris Erickson) who said he would consult his supervisor.
