San Bernardino named semifinalist for California Arts Council cultural district; site visit set

The city’s East Street Corridor is a semifinalist for a California Arts Council cultural-district designation. Commissioners were told that CAC board members will visit for a site tour and community roundtable limited to 20 participants.
Parks & Recreation staff told the commission that the East Street Corridor application advanced to semifinalist status with support from Arts Connection, the Garcia Center and letters of intent from the mayor’s office and economic development. The primary applicant is Arts Connection, staff said.
Board members from the California Arts Council are scheduled to hold a site visit and community roundtable as part of the semifinalist review. Staff said the visit will include a timed tour of the corridor, mapping of arts and cultural assets (California Theater, Court Street, historic McDonald’s building, Campo Santo and military-heritage sites), and a community roundtable limited by CAC rules to 20 participants.
Commissioners asked that local artists, small-business owners and historical-preservation stakeholders be included in the roundtable. Staff said Michael Segura and representatives from the Garcia Center will participate in the visit and that the city will compile a short list of invitees to meet the CAC limit.
No formal action was taken; staff said next steps include the site visit and follow-up reporting to the commission after the CAC board meets.
