Assistant Superintendent Jenny Bockel updated the board on grants and program activity on Oct. 8, saying the district submitted its required Section 41 bilingual report and completed the consolidated grant application requesting Title II, III and IV funds.
Bockel said Title II and Title IV requests will support a literacy coach at Paddock and other district initiatives, and that Title III and the Section 41 submission support services for English language learners. She said the consolidated application was delayed by federal timing and recent budget changes but is now complete.
Bockel also announced that Milan Middle School received a Washtenaw County Conservation District school-and-community habitat grant to support a pollinator garden in the middle-school courtyard. She credited eighth-grade science teacher Jenny Crose for leading the application and noted that Milan FFA alumni helped clear the site over the summer; the maintenance department has plumbed the site for watering.
The assistant superintendent said district staff would continue to apply for competitive grants and steward awarded funds to support classroom instruction and student supports. No board action was required on the items presented.
At least one board member thanked the teachers, volunteers and the business office for timely grant management; the board also referenced the consolidated grant when discussing the state budget earlier in the meeting.
