Cranford engineers describe paving, culvert sampling and repaving plans; lane closures expected for testing

Commissioner Andrews provided a series of engineering updates at the Sept. 16 Township Committee meeting, outlining near-term work that will affect traffic and neighborhoods.
Improvements at Kanishka Passage were completed in time for the first day of school; Andrews described resident feedback gathered on site and a minor follow-up investigation to address possible soil migration at a gradient change. Lambert and the Adams softball-field area are scheduled for stakeouts and concrete work followed by milling and paving in the week of Oct. 6; the commissioner said the project adds sidewalks and crosswalks near playgrounds and school access.
Andrews described Orange Brook culvert work: the culvert creates a bottleneck that contributes to flooding in nearby neighborhoods. The next step requires subsurface testing—borings up to 20 feet deep—to support fall design work. That sampling will require closing West Holly and Spring Garden streets for at least one day (possibly two) while the work occurs; the township will try to schedule the work on a Wednesday to reduce school-related traffic and will notify affected neighbors and apartment occupants whose parking lots may be inaccessible during the work.
Separately, repaving under the rail bridge on North Union is scheduled as night work in early October. Andrews also summarized a background for a township mailer about a voluntary community solar enrollment program and said about 465 enrollments had been received so far.
