Riverton — The Riverton City Council on Nov. 4 adopted Resolution No. 1534 creating the Rendezvous Activity Center Committee to advise the council on design, programming and funding options for a proposed multisport facility.
City Administrator Kyle Butterfield presented the resolution, describing the committee as an advisory body modeled on previously successful citizen committees. The draft called for one city-council member and six to eight community members, with the city administrator or designee serving ex officio.
Council discussion focused on membership, terms, and oversight. Councilman Mike Bailey moved — and the council later voted to amend — the resolution to require that the committee’s bylaws be submitted to and approved by the Riverton City Council. The council also agreed in motion to include two members of the Riverton Youth Council as designated by the council.
The council appointed seven community members who had submitted letters of interest: Mary Axhelm; Brooke L. Denison; Bridal Howell; Cindy Olson Roden; Zack Sanders (name spelling as submitted); Jesse Smith; and Addie Thomas. The council also designated Councilman Mike Bailey and Councilwoman Rebecca Pearson Lewis as the council liaisons to the committee; the vote to appoint the community members and the liaisons passed following procedural motions and a short recess.
Why it matters: The committee will develop programming, help shape a feasibility study follow-up and identify funding sources for a multi-sport facility. The council’s added requirement that the committee’s bylaws be approved by the council preserves elected oversight of committee governance.
What the council said: Butterfield said the group would “evaluate the existing recreational opportunities” and pursue public and private partnerships. Councilmembers emphasized the need for bylaws and alternates and noted the committee will serve until dissolved by council resolution.
Next steps: The committee will draft bylaws, which must now be approved by the Riverton City Council; staff will proceed with initial meetings and scheduling.
