Summary
Council directed staff to place an item on the next agenda to ratify any city manager action to assist the local food bank amid a federal shutdown. City Manager discussed a rough contribution amount of about $15,000 and suggested designating a portion for military families; no funding was approved tonight.
YUBA CITY — The Yuba City Council asked staff to return to the next meeting with an item to ratify any city manager actions to assist the local food bank in response to a federal shutdown that interrupted food‑assistance programs.
During council reports, Mayor Shaw raised whether councilors wanted the city to help the local food bank to address immediate unmet need. City Manager Robert Bindorff reported he had spoken with Maria Ball, executive director of the local food bank, and with other local administrators. "A rough amount that seems to be on the minds of local jurisdictions that I've talked to is somewhere around $15,000," Bindorff said, adding that jurisdictions he had spoken with were also considering designating part of any contribution for military families.
Bindorff told the council that some counties are redirecting eligibility workers to assist at food‑bank distribution points because need is so high, and that even if federal processes are restored, benefit recipients may face delays in enrollment or payments. Staff advised the council they could not take final action at tonight's meeting because the item was not agendized with an urgency exception; the city attorney outlined two options: place an agenda item next meeting to decide funding, or have the council ratify any city manager actions taken in the interim.
Council members, without objection, agreed to place on the next agenda a ratification of any contribution or city manager actions to provide immediate food assistance. No funds were authorized this evening; if the city manager takes action before the next meeting, the council will consider ratification at the subsequent meeting. Council discussion mentioned prioritizing half of any contribution for military families, but no final allocation was decided.
