City staff and committee members reported on the first arts roundtable held Oct. 24 at the Santa Rosa Art Center, saying about 18 artists, business owners and nonprofit representatives attended and identified neighborhood strengths and priorities.
Meredith, staff lead, said attendees described the area as a cultural hub with a compact, walkable layout and distinct architecture, and they proposed ideas such as a sculpture garden at Juilliard Park, banner wayfinding, expanded events and stronger hotel/visitor marketing to connect the district to downtown.
"The purpose was to explore creative opportunities, explore what the community identity is, and look at developing future programming," staff said of the kickoff. Breakout groups mapped project ideas and action items, and both groups returned similar recommendations, staff added.
Committee members emphasized that the roundtable revealed a need for more city collaboration on events and for attention to sustainability and activation strategies (open studio hours, storefront window activations, temporary installations) rather than relying solely on occasional large events.
Committee members volunteered to formalize the effort. The committee moved to appoint Kristen, Lauren and Nancy to an ad hoc arts roundtable committee to determine future roundtable locations, engage partners and help follow up on the action items. The motion passed unanimously.
Staff said they plan to rotate future roundtables across districts in 2026, produce maps and banner calls for art, and work on partnerships with local schools and tourism entities.
