Santa Rosa panel approves $12,620 for Prince Memorial Greenway mural repairs

The Art and Public Places Committee on Monday approved a $12,620 contract with ArtStart to repair murals and apply an anti‑graffiti coating along Prince Memorial Greenway.

Committee staff told members the work targets frequent graffiti and damage to the dragon mosaic and other permanent art pieces, some of which have been damaged by fires that melted tile adhesive. "Their quote came back ... the estimated cost of $12,620," staff said when introducing the scope and timeline.

The committee's public‑art maintenance budget for the fiscal year includes $15,000 for repairs. Staff recommended allocating the Prince Memorial Greenway funds from that bucket and then assessing additional maintenance needs elsewhere in the city.

Committee members asked for location photos and a map of the specific repair sites before work begins. Staff said they will provide photos and location mapping and consider documenting the work on the public art web page, including maintenance instructions from artists when available.

The motion to approve the ArtStart contract passed unanimously. Chair Cher Nathanson recorded the board's vote as "aye," and the clerk noted all committee members voting in favor.

Staff and community partners — including Friends of Prince Memorial Greenway and ArtStart — will coordinate timing for an end‑of‑spring or early‑summer start. Staff said the anti‑graffiti coating is expected to help reduce recurring damage, but acknowledged some pieces, notably the dragon mosaic, may require additional creative solutions to improve long‑term durability.
