Mount Pleasant announcements: South Shore names Dustin Ellis new fire chief; trustee announces resignation

The Mount Pleasant Village Board used its opening portion of the Oct. 27 meeting to announce that the Police and Fire Commission unanimously appointed Dustin Ellis as the next chief of the South Shore Fire Department following completion of a background check; the commission made the decision on Oct. 22.

A promotional ceremony will be scheduled at Fire Station No. 8 and, at Chief Ellis’s request, will be combined with other departmental promotions so the department can celebrate collectively. Dustin Ellis thanked the board and department colleagues: “First of all, I appreciate the kind words. Thank you very much. I couldn't have gotten where I've gotten in this position without the support of the men and women of the South Shore Fire Department.” He added, “We're here to make you guys proud and that's what we're gonna continue to do.”

In reports the board recognized Officer Ramos for his community service and for speaking at the Racine‑Kenosha Habitat for Humanity gala; trustees asked the chief to convey congratulations to the officer.

Later in the meeting Trustee Andrew announced he will submit his resignation effective Friday. Andrew said he enjoyed his time in municipal government but needs to focus on work and other endeavors; colleagues publicly thanked him for his service and wished him well. In closing the board invited Andrew to make one final motion; he moved to adjourn, the motion was seconded and the meeting was adjourned.

The meeting did not specify the effective date beyond the statement that the resignation will be submitted Friday, nor did it list a process or timeline for filling the vacancy.
