Bristow signs ordered; South Avenue plantings largely healthy with a few trees on watch

Staff reported ordered Bristow signs that credit the land trust, removal of one hazardous tree, and that of about 139 trees planted along South Avenue only a small number (about six) are on a watch list; replacements are contracted as needed and paving next summer may affect alignment and some plantings.
Town staff told the commission Oct. 9 that the New Canaan Land Trust–credited signs for Bristow are on order and will be installed at the Old Route 106 and Mead Park entrances; staff will remove the existing signs when new ones are in place. The commission also discussed the removal of one hazardous tree and said routine maintenance is ongoing.
On South Avenue, staff reported that most new plantings are thriving but that hornbeam and one maple species are under stress. Of the roughly 139 trees planted, staff said about half a dozen are on a watch list and will be replaced under the contractor’s warranty if they fail. The highway department has been watering multiple times per week to support establishment.
Staff cautioned that paving and alignment work planned for next summer still could affect some trees; if plantings are damaged, the contractor will be responsible for replacement under the existing agreement. Commissioners asked staff to revisit homeowners who previously declined trees to see whether they might now accept plantings, and staff agreed to review plans and as-built drawings to identify possible additional planting locations.
The Bristow land trust and recent Bard at Bristow event drew positive comments from commissioners, who said the event was well received and illustrated effective partnership opportunities.
