Emily Ryan of Preservation Houston, who authored the nomination report, urged the commission to recommend designation and summarized archival evidence of the church’s role in political organizing, public‑health efforts and civil‑rights activity. “Over the course of its 123 year history Greater Rose Hill Missionary Baptist Church has made significant contributions to the betterment of its third word community,” Ryan said, noting Reverend William Sykes’s work during the Depression and the church’s long civic engagement.
Staff recommended designation, citing the property’s historic associations and the written nomination. Commissioner Ashley Jones moved to accept staff’s recommendation; Commissioner Robert Browning seconded. The commission voiced approval and the motion carried unanimously.
