Conservation Commission votes to continue guest-speaker program

The New Canaan Conservation Commission voted unanimously Oct. 9 to continue its guest-speaker program and asked Commissioner Anne to prepare a written proposal outlining cadence, speaker selection and publicity. The program, which brought experts such as firefly researcher Bill McDonald and bird specialist Frank Gallo to 15-minute segments at prior meetings, aims to educate residents and inform commission work.

Commissioners said the program served both an internal educational role and a public outreach function. "It was an education about that project and, and about the importance of, conservation around, you know, our firefly populations," Anne said, recalling past presentations. Commissioners discussed holding “special guest” meetings for particularly topical talks and using calendar notices in local papers and online to drum up attendance.

Commissioner John urged amplifying presentations after the meeting so residents who could not attend could still hear the main points, proposing short video excerpts and social-media distribution. "Amplification" — sending a short summary and clip after the meeting — was described as a practical way to extend the reach of speakers without duplicating the full meeting record.

The motion to continue the program directed Anne to work with the commission on recommendations for future speakers and timing. The commission also discussed alternative venues, including library events or co-sponsored sessions with town groups, to create larger in-person audiences when appropriate. Anne said she would work with commissioners on topic suggestions.

The commission will track implementation through follow-up reports from Anne and expects to place proposed speakers and a cadence on an upcoming agenda.
