APD reports citywide crime down 8%; homicide down 26% but pedestrian robberies remain a concern

Deputy Chief Charles Hampton told the Public Safety and Legal Administration Committee on Sept. 22 that Atlanta Police Department statistics show an overall reduction in crime but persistent public-safety challenges in certain categories.
"Overall crime is down 8%," Hampton said, adding that "Homicide is down 26%." He told the committee one zone remained up in crime while most zones are showing reductions.
Hampton said aggravated assaults involving juveniles were under active investigation by APD units and that robberies—especially pedestrian robberies tied to isolated online sale meetings—remain a trouble spot. He urged residents to use public locations such as police precincts for in-person online sales.
The deputy chief also reviewed results from recent targeted operations: "Out of those deployments, there were 103 arrests, 34 convicted felons, 24 documented gang members were arrested, and 30 guns were seized," he said, calling the operations a collaborative effort with state and federal partners.
Hampton noted APD is preparing for major upcoming events on the city calendar and reported other operational details, including long-term crime trends and clearance rates.
Council members did not take legislative action on the presentation; the department answered questions about zone-level trends and upcoming enforcement plans.
