Lenexa council approves 3‑year special use permit for Range USA indoor shooting range

The Lenexa City Council on a unanimous vote approved a three‑year special use permit and a companion preliminary plan for Range USA to build and operate an indoor shooting range on a roughly 2.5‑acre vacant lot at the northwest corner of 100th and Seventh Street and Santa Fe Trail Drive.

City staff told the council the site is zoned BP‑2 and designated business park on the comprehensive plan. The proposed building is about 10,000 square feet, would include a retail area, classroom space and an indoor range configured with 18 lanes. Staff and the Planning Commission recommended approval after review of land‑use criteria including neighborhood character, parking and traffic impacts.

Kevin Ali, the applicant representing Range USA, said the company operates a national chain and planned to be a responsible local operator. "We have 50 stores," Ali said, and indicated the company will invest in the site and local operations.

Council members noted the site had stood vacant for many years and expressed support for redeveloping the corner. Council member Craig moved approval of the ordinance granting a three‑year special use permit; Chelsea seconded the motion. Council then approved the companion preliminary plan by motion of Craig, seconded by John Michael. No council member recorded an objection.

The special use permit is limited to three years per the ordinance approved by the council; final engineering and site plan refinements will occur during the final plan stage before construction begins.
