The Public Art Committee on Nov. 5 approved placing a life-size bronze of Dr. Eugenie Clark, the marine biologist known as the "Shark Lady," on City Island (Ken Thompson Parkway) with the stipulation that staff finalize a formal agreement with Mote Marine, which leases property on City Island.
Staff said the sculpture was developed through the Statues for Equality initiative and that the artist worked directly with Dr. Clark—s family to confirm details, including authentic snorkeling equipment. The finished bronze is complete and will be shipped to Sarasota; staff reported shipping and installation funds were included in the fiscal-year 2024 appropriation.
The committee discussed several potential placement points on City Island and the desirability of situating the sculpture near the original Mote Marine facility so visitors could make a historical connection. Staff said the city would retain responsibility for installation and ongoing maintenance but will coordinate a formal site agreement with Mote Marine because the organization currently leases the parcel.
A motion to approve placement on City Island, with authority for staff to explore alternative nearby locations if necessary, passed unanimously. Staff will return with the finalized site, a pedestal and lighting plan and a timeline for shipment and installation.
