Devon E. Hudson, a longtime South DeKalb resident and local real-estate broker, was appointed to Post 6 on the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority board after a voice vote by the DeKalb County Public and Infrastructure commission. The appointment followed an interview during which Hudson outlined his local roots and involvement with MARTA-related matters.
Hudson told commissioners he moved to South DeKalb in 1983 to open a State Farm agency and later developed Class A office space on Flat Shoals Parkway. "My name is Devon Hudson. I'm a 43 year resident of South DeKalb," he said during the interview, noting work as a licensed real-estate broker and contractor.
In response to questions from commissioners about MARTA finances and ridership, Hudson said MARTA's roughly $1.5 billion budget includes about $900 million for capital and that sales tax receipts form a significant portion of revenues. "Our 1% makes up a big portion of that," he said, arguing that transit-oriented development and public-private partnerships could create additional revenue streams beyond ridership.
Hudson also discussed equity and representation, telling the panel that appointees from DeKalb must "stand up and listen and hear the people" across North and South DeKalb and advocate for the county's residents on matters such as station-area development and municipal seat allocations. On technology and future services, he praised MARTA's contactless payment rollout and urged the board to pursue innovations and regional connectivity.
The commission moved to approve the appointment at the end of the meeting. No opposition was recorded on the voice vote.
Hudson will join the MARTA board as DeKalb's representative for Post 6; the commission did not specify a start date during the session.
