Public health department reports immunizations, West Nile surveillance and successful mobile dental clinic

Robin, speaking for the Iroquois County Public Health Department, summarized program activity and grant balances during the Nov. 4 Health Committee meeting.

Robin reported 27 building inspections by environmental health staff and 16 West Nile surveillance tests for the season, which ended Oct. 15. The department administered 111 childhood immunizations and 165 adult immunizations, primarily flu and COVID vaccines; staff ran two flu clinics and completed vision screenings for 389 children beginning in August. Robin said the department has begun STI testing and treatment this month and noted a single rabies exposure case is being treated as a precaution.

On grants, staff reviewed multiple grant balances including safe-drinking-water, lead, opioid/Narcan training and public-health emergency preparedness funds. Robin described one respiratory (RESP) grant as uncertain after prior funding interruptions and said she did not budget the award into the current fiscal year until payment is confirmed.

Robin provided details on a mobile dental clinic operated by Community Health Partnership of Illinois (CHP). The clinic, a wheelchair-accessible van with an exam room and x-ray equipment, accepts Medicaid and private insurance, offers payment plans for self-pay patients and can provide fillings and dentures. The department said demand is high, with full schedules and waiting lists; staff are seeking to host clinics every other month and coordinate prioritization for schoolchildren identified by school nurses.

Committee members asked about billing, lab submissions and the department's plans to train staff for in-house specimen handling; staff said some lab work remains contracted out pending future training.

Robin invited committee members to the full public-health board meeting the following evening and noted a new medical director is in place.
