"We did a 10‑day study. There were 4,440 vehicles surveyed," Sheriff Haines said, describing the counts and speed statistics. The study identified approximately 200 vehicles exceeding a referenced threshold; the reported 85th‑percentile speeds were about 27 mph for receiving traffic and about 30 mph for approaching traffic. Based on the study, staff recommended a safe posted speed of 30 mph, down from the current 45 mph.
Commissioner Williams moved to place the sheriff’s recommended speed change on the regular session agenda; Commissioner Simpkins seconded. The commission approved the motion by voice vote. The work session action advances the study recommendation for formal ordinance or administrative action at the next meeting.
