A council member raised a constituent request for an ADA‑accessible parking stall in front of Phoenix Physical Therapy on State Street during matters from council on Nov. 3. Public Works Superintendent Anthony and staff discussed technical and cost implications.
Anthony said an ADA stall typically requires a wider (15–16 foot) space with cross‑hatch access for lift‑equipped vans, curb cutting and resloping of sidewalks, truncated domes and possibly converting brick parking surfaces to concrete to meet ADA surface requirements. He estimated the total cost for installing a compliant stall in that area could be about $15,000, and cautioned that creating an ADA stall in that location would likely eliminate two existing standard parking stalls.
Councilors discussed the need for a purposeful downtown plan for ADA stall placement tied to the city’s ADA transition plan and the practical tradeoffs between business requests and block‑level parking supply. No formal action was taken; staff was asked to consider placement strategy and costs for follow‑up.
