San Antonio City Council on Oct. 9 proclaimed October 2025 as Filipino American History Month and heard remarks from local Filipino American leaders who outlined events and a push to document community history.
Myra Dumapias, founding president of the San Antonio chapter of the Filipino American National Historical Society, told council that Filipino community organizers and institutions are staging exhibitions, oral-history workshops and panels this month. She invited councilmembers to support and attend events and asked residents to help capture local histories.
Dumapias listed several events and dates included in the local calendar: Oct. 18 (opening ceremony for a "Golden Years: Philippine Martial Law" exhibit with spoken-word performances), Oct. 25 (an oral-history interview workshop), and Nov. 1 (a panel with torture survivors and the exhibit curator). She framed the observance as an opportunity to record stories that have been omitted from historical records and to celebrate Filipino contributions to San Antonio.
Speakers emphasized the long history of Filipino Americans in the U.S. and their contributions to labor movements, military service and civic life. Councilmembers and community representatives asked residents to attend this month'long programming and to increase engagement with Filipino organizations in San Antonio.
The proclamation is ceremonial; no ordinance or funding allocation was adopted during the meeting segment. Councilmembers thanked organizers and encouraged ongoing participation.
