County IT signs one‑year Varonis SaaS renewal at discounted rate after legal review

Cowlitz County information‑technology staff asked commissioners to approve a one‑year renewal and migration of the Varonis data‑security product from an on‑premise installation to the vendor’s cloud (SaaS) offering. Travis, IT staff, said the county historically licensed Varonis on‑prem and paid about $163,000 for software licenses plus on‑prem hardware; moving to the vendor’s cloud offering was quoted last year at more than $200,000 but staff negotiated a one‑year renewal at approximately $99,000.

Travis said legal staff and the vendor’s legal team revised and agreed to contract language. He said the vendor indicated modest annual increases of roughly 7–10 percent in future years; staff considered but did not recommend a multi‑year commitment at this time because the county may wish to evaluate competitive products in the future.

"Varonis helps us understand and protect our most sensitive data by showing exactly where critical information lives, who has access to it, and how it's being used," Travis said. He told commissioners that moving to the cloud eliminates immediate hardware replacement costs for end‑of‑life servers currently supporting the on‑prem deployment.

Commissioners indicated approval to proceed with the one‑year cloud renewal after staff confirmed the legal review and the negotiated price.
