Dr. Matkins introduced a fourth grader, Reagan Duncan, whose artwork has been selected for display in the North Carolina General Assembly Art Show next spring and into 2026. "Congratulations to Reagan and her art teacher, Miss Lundy, for representing Pitt County so beautifully at the state level," Dr. Matkins said.
The board also recognized two art-education leaders. Tiffany Zariana was named the North Carolina Arts Educators Association Rookie of the Year; Russell Knight, the district’s coordinator of arts education, received the Friends of the Arts award. Cathy Bello read a nomination letter that credited Knight with advocating to make arts a high-school graduation requirement, expanding field-trip transportation, and raising approximately $12,000 at the ECU Arts Festival for teacher supplies.
In global education, Hannah Butler described steps to expand the district’s seal-of-biliteracy by using an approved external exam so students who speak languages other than Spanish have a path to level-4 proficiency recognition. Butler said that when the program started in 2022 the district awarded 49 seals; last year’s graduating class received 149 seals.
The board also congratulated Pitt County Schools Early College High School for a national ranking by U.S. News & World Report placing the program among the top 40% of high schools in the country and recognized the school nutrition team for receiving the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Action for Healthy Kids Innovation in Education Award.
The superintendent announced that the district’s strategic-plan survey will be open to the public from tomorrow through Nov. 16 in English and Spanish and urged students, staff, parents and community members to complete it.
