Kentwood commission approves chairs, elevator maintenance, engineering design, compensation study and easement for street reconstruction

- Replacement of 110 police-department workstation chairs. Staff said the chairs date to the building's opening (about 23 years old) and requested replacement at an estimated total cost of about $60,000. Commissioners approved the purchase by voice vote.
- A three-year elevator maintenance contract with Elevator Sales and Service. Staff said the contract was competitively bid, that Elevator Sales and Service has provided reliable service at a lower cost than the prior vendor, and that annual contract costs range roughly between $5,500 and $6,000; the commission approved the contract.
- Design and construction engineering services for the 40 Eighth Street rehabilitation with Rowe Professional Services Company, not to exceed $186,813 (including a 10% contingency), funded from the major street fund. Staff explained Rowe proposed more construction-inspection hours than the lowest bidder, and commissioners discussed the importance of inspection hours during construction.
- A compensation study with Gallagher Benefit Services in an amount stated in the meeting as $42,000 plus a 10% contingency from the FY26 general fund. Staff said the study will cover roughly 140 nonunion and KGEA positions; police and fire unions were excluded from the study because their pay is determined by collective bargaining.
- A resolution of necessity authorizing acquisition of a roughly 6.5-foot easement at the northeast corner of 50 Second Street to allow construction of a right-turn lane and to reestablish the sidewalk as part of the Breton Ravines project. The clerk recorded six "yes" votes and the resolution passed.
All procurement motions were approved by the commission during the meeting. The meeting transcript did not record full roll-call tallies for each individual procurement motion; the resolution for the 50 Second Street easement recorded six yes votes in the transcript.
