The committee authorized a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) amendment with Newfield Construction Group LLC for the Marvin Elementary School HVAC improvement project for $2,981,136 and approved an additional change-order allowance of up to $298,113.
Staff explained the item follows a rebid and rescoping process after earlier bids exceeded budget. Officials said engineers refined the design to address Marvin’s specific needs, which produced bids that fit within available funds. Staff reported that equipment orders will follow once contracts are signed to ensure materials arrive in time for installation next summer.
Committee members asked follow-up questions about timing and whether the work could be completed in a single summer; staff explained that middle-school-sized buildings commonly require two summers for asbestos abatement or other multi-phase work, and that contracts are bid knowing the multi-summer sequencing when applicable. Staff also noted they bundle two-summer contracts so pricing reflects the full scope and materials are pre-purchased and staged to avoid later re-bidding.
The motion to authorize the GMP amendment and related change-order limit passed unanimously.
