Summary
Court staff announced resources for people involved in eviction cases: rental-assistance case managers from DuPage County Community Services, free legal assistance from Prairie State Legal Services, and a free, judge-ordered eviction mediation program. Phone numbers, in-court brochures and mediation logistics were provided.
Court staff in DuPage County told people on the eviction docket that several resources are available, including rental-assistance case managers, free legal aid and a court-run mediation program. "There are several resources available to you," the court staff said.
The announcements said case managers from DuPage County Community Services can connect landlords and tenants with rental-assistance funds and housing services. Court staff gave the case-management phone number as (630) 407-6510 and said people in the courtroom can pick up printed instructions from the table in front of the bench. Callers are asked to have their court case number ready when they call.
Court staff said representatives from Prairie State Legal Services can provide free legal assistance to those who qualify; the organization may be available in the courtroom on certain days in person or over Zoom. The phone number for Prairie State Legal Services was given as (630) 690-2130. Court staff warned that due to high call volume it can take several days for a response and urged immediate contact for faster service. A brochure of legal resources is available on the table in front of the judge for landlords representing themselves.
Court staff also described an eviction mediation program in which a neutral third party helps landlords and tenants communicate to try to reach a mutual agreement. Mediation is free and is ordered by the court at the judge’s discretion under local court rules; attorneys may attend. The mediation center’s phone number was listed as (630) 407-8807. Court staff said the center is located at the top of the Third Floor escalator. If a judge orders mediation, the case will be assigned an appointment date and time and the order provides directions for attending.
Court staff explained that a copy of a mediation order can be obtained free for seven days following entry via the eAccess account, or self-represented litigants may contact the mediation center to obtain a copy. For mediation inquiries the court provided the contact email evictionmediation@dupagecourts.gov.
The announcements focused on available services and contact instructions; they did not include any court rulings or changes to case schedules.
