Geneva removes license fee requirement for city boat launch to improve river access

The Geneva City Council approved a draft ordinance change during the Committee of the Whole on Nov. 3 that removes the license and fee requirement from the city code for use of the city‑owned boat launch.
Assistant City Administrator Ben McCrady said the change was prepared after research and requests from staff and local organizations; the intent is to make access to paddlecraft simpler and to align Geneva with other communities along the Fox River. Staff noted that certain code provisions remain, such as prohibitions on blocking the ramp to ensure emergency access.
Fire and emergency staff clarified there is one city‑owned launch (north of the dam) and other nearby launch points exist on county property. The council approved the change by voice vote.
Outcome: Ordinance code change approved by voice vote; staff to update code language and public information.
