At the Nov. 5 meeting, Travis, the public defender, told the Stephenson County Services Committee that office staffing has been stable but that short-term absences among judges produced brief backlogs in recent weeks.
"It's been a little busy," Travis said, noting judges being gone for periods of time and the resulting backlog. He described trial-season variability but said the office has been managing caseloads.
Dr. McGee reported that the committee had approved a second supervisor position and that interviews are scheduled in November. "That person can't begin until after the first of the year, the new budget," Dr. McGee said, adding that there are four internal and four external candidates under consideration.
Safety-training and court operations staff reported intermittent internet outages in the office that required staff to "think outside the box" to ensure hearings and filings proceeded as scheduled. Staff urged committee members to note the operational impacts when discussing court services and scheduling.
No policy changes or personnel appointments were finalized at the meeting; the supervisor hire remains contingent on the new budget cycle and the internal/external interview process.
