Emergency vendor response and fall cleanups completed; trimming and lighting work next

Committee members received an update on landscaping and grounds contracts at the Nov. 3 meeting. Doctor White said several contracts were delayed and that emergency purchase orders were issued to get grounds work done quickly so schools could open on schedule. She said vendors responded rapidly and the work was supplemented by the city's Department of Public Works where needed.

White said fall cleanups — including leaf removal and mulching as part of the cleanup — are proceeding and that the next scheduled work is trimming vegetation near walkways and exterior lighting to improve night-time visibility. She showed staff photos of completed work and noted that beautification planting is typically handled at the school level by PTOs and community groups.

Board member Miss Downer pressed for more attention to shrub and bush trimming at inner-city schools and suggested exploring vendor-adopt-a-school or volunteer partnerships to ensure equity of appearance across neighborhoods. Miss Wilcox asked whether leaves could be repurposed for composting; staff said they would research available city composting programs and feasibility.

Doctor White said the district is implementing a vendor-performance form for landscaping work that documents timeliness and scope and that the same approach could be used for snow removal and other recurring vendor services.
