NANTUCKET, Mass. — After Article 1 was adopted, the planning board moved to take no action on Article 2 and that motion was approved by town meeting voters.
David Iverson, identified in the meeting as the planning board's representative, changed the planning board's motion to "take no action" on Article 2 and the motion was seconded. A motion to move the question ended debate and the subsequent electronic vote on the planning board's motion recorded yes 925, no 485; the motion to take no action was adopted, meaning Article 2 will not be enacted at this meeting.
Planning board members argued that Article 2 contains elements designed to shift housing toward long-term rentals and to create incentives for year-round rental housing. A planning board member noted that some provisions could produce housing outcomes without negative economic effects and urged voters to consider discussing the article rather than taking no action. "There are aspects of article 2 that will really help provide more year round rental housing," a planning board speaker said.
Opponents at the mic warned about potential legal challenges if the town adopted Article 2 and urged caution. One commenter advised voters to consider state or federal reviews that could overturn local action.
The moderator confirmed procedure: a successful motion to move the question ended debate and led directly to the vote on the motion to take no action. With that vote adopted, Article 2 was not advanced further at the special town meeting.
