The United Nations said it was "deeply alarmed" by reports of grave violations against civilians in North Darfur after Rapid Support Forces fighters captured the state capital, Al Fashir. Local volunteers documented alleged executions, sexual violence, humiliation, extortion and other abuses, the spokesperson said (00:06:12).
The International Organization for Migration reported nearly 82,000 people have fled Al Fashir and surrounding areas since Oct. 26, including to Tawela where humanitarian needs are already high. The UN Population Fund reported that women and girls face abduction and extreme violence while escaping Al Fashir, and local medical sources reported about 1,300 people with gunshot wounds arriving in nearby localities after attacks on civilians.
The spokesperson again called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urged all parties to uphold obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians and allow the safe, unhindered passage of humanitarian workers and relief supplies. UNHCR said Chad now hosts about 1.4 million refugees, mostly from Darfur, and that a further influx from escalating violence in Al Fashir is anticipated; UNHCR teams are reinforcing preparedness and prepositioning supplies near border reception areas such as Adre and Tin.
No Security Council action or new UN mandate was announced during the briefing; the update was presented as reporting and appeal for international assistance.
