Parks commission updates: Capo Field funding, pickleball courts, playground orders and fall events

Commission staff told the commission that multiple capital and operational projects are moving forward across town parks.

Susan reported that Capo Field is being funded with approximately $2,000,000 from the town and more than $3,000,000 from an athletic association or foundation toward planned improvements. She said pickleball facilities are in the design stage: Keith Simpson is working on designs for six courts but four lighted courts are scheduled for the 2026 budget and construction plan.

The children's playground equipment has been approved by the selectmen and town council and ordered; funding combines town funds, a state grant and contributions from the Friends of the Playground group. An adult fitness area is open and accessible improvements have been completed at the park.

Staff reported work has begun on the West Parking Lot and that irrigation upgrades recently installed across Midpark have greatly improved automated watering for fields and courts, though some system teething problems remain. Court tape replacements and other routine maintenance are planned for next year.

Commissioners and staff also reviewed recent events and usage: the Carriage Barns art show drew a large crowd, Caffeine & Carburetors is scheduled for Oct. 19 and a fall festival is planned for Oct. 24. Staff noted strong program participation in youth sports (flag football, cheerleading) and waiting lists due to limited volunteer coaches.
