Parks commission authorizes New Canaan Land Trust to place Green Link directional sign in Erwin Park

The New Canaan Parks Commission voted to permit the New Canaan Land Trust to install a small directional sign in Erwin Park indicating the New Canaan Green Link and the New Canaan Nature Center.

Robin, representing the New Canaan Land Trust, told commissioners the sign would be modest, feature the Land Trust logo and a directional arrow, and be installed on park property near the crosswalk by Wohakme and Weed. "We're looking for permission if the parks were interested in allowing us to put up a small sign, with our logo that shows indicate to the green link and to indicate the nature center," Robin said during the presentation.

The request followed Land Trust observations that many walkers and visitors were unaware of the Green Link connection from Erwin Park to the New Canaan Nature Center. Robin said the Land Trust would pay for the sign and would coordinate with town staff and Bill Flynn at the Nature Center to confirm wording and placement.

Commissioners discussed alternatives such as a larger map or multiple signs but favored a small directional marker that would not add clutter. The commission approved the request "subject to" consultation with the Nature Center and town staff; Melanie moved the motion and Susan seconded it. Commissioners did not record individual vote tallies during the roll call.

The commission asked the Land Trust to coordinate exact placement and post-installation maintenance arrangements with Parks staff and the Nature Center before the sign is installed.
